In Japan, the gods have never been distant. They live in ancient trees, sacred stones, and the silence between torii gates — threaded through daily life since long before Shinto became a formal religion.
Many modern Japanese do not believe in gods in a literal sense. Yet they visit shrines at New Year, mark their children's growth with offerings, and gather for festivals that have continued for centuries. The shrine is not merely a place of worship — it is where community, nature, and memory converge.
Through this series, I immerse myself in these sacred spaces, not to document religion, but to sense what remains — the breath of something older than belief itself.
